A History Of A Deck Of Cards And Its Suits

Cards, known as Saracen cards, were introduced to Europe in the second half of the 14th century. The people in more rural areas, having survived the “Black Death” were moving to the cities. Here they began a class of merchants and artisans who became middle class urbanities. Coming out of the dark ages with its superstition, ignorance and poverty, guilds and universities made a reappearance, scientific experimentation was once again allowed and thrived, and the populace now had time for leisure and play.

Books, cards, and prints were produced by hand during the early Renaissance period. Artists and scientists came together and became the moving force behind the spread of card games throughout Italy. Many illustrated card-manual manuscripts began to show up in a number of major cities including Viterbo near Rome in Italy, Paris and Barcelona by the late–th century. Traveling scholars and artists were responsible for card games gaining in popularity and becoming more widespread. Where once a single craftsman in early 15th century could satisfy the demand for cards in a city, by the mid 15th century, many shops worked full time to fulfill the need.

Card manuscripts were not loved by everyone. Indeed many were threatened by this foreign entertainment and saw it as a force to promote gambling and as an immoral and counter cultural product of the devil. At the time of the protestant Reformation, the cards were referred to as “Devil Pictures.”

No matter or because of this devilish image, card playing stood its ground. The English queen, Mary, Queen of Scots not only bet big, but bet on Sunday! The Compleat Gamester was published in London in the late 17th century, with descriptions of over a dozen types of card games and the winning strategies involved in their play. In Venice, specific types of facilities called casini allowed admittance of aristocrats and courtesans to indulge in games of cards. It was here that a game called primero was invented and spread throughout the continent to later morph into poker.

In time, women as well as men, farmers and merchants as well as courtesans and nobles were able to enter the games and found symbols of themselves represented in the cards. A Swedish deck that became very much the rage, was comprised of these suits in order of ranking: sun, king, queen, knight, dame, valet and maid. Those ribald Florentines played with cards that pictured nude dames and dancers, with the dancers being the low suit.

Interestingly, the number of cards in a deck at the time was not standard, consisting of 30-40 or 52 cards. The designs also varied considerably. The suits most preferred were symbolic of wealth, food, military security as well as popular sports of the court:, coins, cups, sabers and clubs. Some of the symbols familiar to us today were typical of those in France: in red, Coeurs (hearts) stood for the church, and correaux (a rectangular floor tile) was a sign of the merchant class; in black, piques (spear and arrow heads) represented state authority, and trefles (trefoil clover leaf) denoted farmers. Somewhere along the line, a brave artisan exchanged the vice-royals symbol with queens.

Time passed and the deck of cards we recognize today was formed, whereby a deck of 52 cards with- various rankings compiled 4 different suits. The familiar Clubs, Spades, Diamonds and Hearts are the suits with Aces, Kings, Queens and Jacks usually weighing in at a value of 10. The non-face cards, 2 through 10 are each counted at face value.

  • The Importance Of Discipline At The Poker Table

    • Author: Thomas Kearns

Most people think of poker players as gamblers in a game of chance. It this were totally true, however, there would not be professionals who make their living by earning more than they lose and amateurs who lose more than they win. The difference here is that the pros have acquired the discipline involved in all sports of learning, understanding, and most essentially, practicing endlessly in their chosen field. They may have card sense, but above all they have the discipline to find a method that works for them.

In fact, there is no such thing as spontaneous talent: music did not “just made sense” to Mozart – where would he be if he hadn’t spent his childhood practicing? One could say that talent is well-practiced potential. But don’t wait for a freaky father to hit you with a rod over your fingers every time you play the wrong card; impose your own discipline.

The amateur plays for the thrill of risk and the adrenaline rush that comes from fighting against blind chance. Poker is kept alive by this rush. The pros leave nothing to chance, the pro knows what his basic odds are and takes full advantage of his opponents’ errors, notes if there are familiar patterns, and calculates the risk. The serious professional player will not expect to enjoy himself at a friendly game of cards, this is his job. And his job is to take every cent he can from the other players gathered around the table having a casual game of poker to pass the time. The professional’s strategy is to match his wits against chance and his opponent’s methods and come out with a win.

Because of the many varieties of poker out there that are regularly played, you must learn them all. You must find the one that is best suited to your intuitions, likes and aptitudes. The one that engages you most fully and keeps you focused is the one to choose. Not having this self-imposed introspection, players find themselves plodding soddenly along in a game which is not turning on their best instincts. A professional will tell them to try another form of the game. They are probably amazed at what a talented performer they have become should they take the pros advice.

Know the difference between limit and no-limit poker, there is a big one. The player with discipline will not yield to temptation and will go for the game where he feels in control, steady and cool. In limit poker, players play with caution, remain calm, and skillfully and accurately obtain and remember information about the other players in order to overcome them with small moves. This disciplined player will play only the hands he deems to be winning, this may be only about 20% of the hands that are dealt.

The no-limit pro will appear to be the opposite of the reserved, cool limit player. He will play aggressively before the flop, and play hands that to a limit expert would appear to be pure folly. The disciplined no-limit player is always aware of exactly what he is trying to achieve with every bold move.

In both cases, no less important than the right move is the ability to restrain oneself and quit when the situation is hopeless or when you feel you are loosing control: it happens to everyone, but the disciplined player dedicated to consistent performance will not pursue the phantom of mounting frustration.

You must never believe that your good fortune, on better days, will go on for eternity. Learn to leave while you are still hot, not when you cool off. During each session, you must not only have a cap on your losses, but also on your gains.

  • Here’s Lots Of Facts Are What To Look For In A Casino Review

If you’ve ever wanted to go to a certain place, you know that the more facts you can track down, the better prepared you’ll be for the trip and the destination. The same is true when it comes to what to look for in a casino review.

For starters, check to see if the review is written by someone who’s an experienced writer or critic. Customers recommendations can be helpful, but someone with experience at evaluating professional operations knows what to look for and how to find it. Seasoned reviewers also know how to go behind the scenes to find out the background of the casino’s ownership and operations, so that readers get a more complete picture of how things are run.

Instead, readers looking for valuable reviews about casinos, as well as online casino websites, need to establish which reviews do the most to give a full, factual picture of what happens at a particular gaming site. One way to test this qualification is to read a few casino reviews written by the same author. If a reader finds that a writer consistently provides lots of facts about a casino as well as his or her evaluation of it, it’s likely that reviews by this critic will provide useful information.

For instance, what about details like the casino’s address, telephone number and website? How about a link to a map and directions? Does the reviewer say if there’s an admission charge or a cover charge at the casino? Is the casino free-standing, or is it part of a hotel or resort complex? What about parking? Dress code? Bar or Lounge? Restaurant?

Next, what does the reviewer tell his or her readers about the types of games offered at the casino? Does the reviewer use specifics, such as “six Blackjack tables, two tables for roulette and a separate Poker parlor”? Or does the review simply say, “all the typical gambling games are present”? If it’s the latter, readers are left wanting to know whether their favorite casino games, such as Keno or craps, are available at this casino.

Finally, has the reviewer done his or her homework about the specifics of betting at the casino? For example, readers should get some idea of the minimum bets at various games such as Blackjack, Poker, Roulette, and the like. Is there a Keno game and how much does it cost? Does the casino have slot machines and what are their betting limits?

In other words, a casino review is only as valuable as the specific facts it gives. Otherwise, it’s simply someone else’s unsubstantiated opinion.

To receive your gambling fixes the legal way without cash, you should try online casino. In order to receive with your free online casino, you need to find the best one for you. There are many different websites that have free casino games on their website.
