Poker Luck – Is It Skill?

Many people claim that a lot of sports players were just outright lucky. Think about Bob Gibson who was in’81 elected in the Hall of Fame and imagine people calling him ‘lucky.’ Well, one would need all the luck in the world to keep on pitching for 16 long years and not have your luck run out on you.
Similarly, in the game of poker luck does play a part. But if you are very lucky then maybe poker isn’t the game for you. This above statement might come across as confusing but read on to know why luck is a true enemy for good poker players.
First of all, let’s talk about luck as it affects beginner level poker players. ‘Luck’ often is responsible for such a player winning the pot. It does take on a variety of forms. The most common being an unusually good hand.
However, a good player has no need for luck to play a part, in fact they rather like to bottle up their luck and store it in the basement. The main reason for this is that they mathematically calculate the best odds to win the game or lose the least amount of money.
A lot of time when a good player wins a hand many people call that person ‘lucky.’ This is because the other people at the table threw their hand but a good player held on to his. This is pure logic, raise your bet to make others feel you have a better set than you do and make them give you the game. No luck, but plain logic.
The deal is that good players also have their lucky days but most of the time they are trying to make the most by thinking logically. So, if you have been winning a lot in poker recently solely because you have been having a great run with lady luck, then it’s a good time to make the most of it, as lady luck doesn’t usually remain with one person.
On the other hand, if you are a good player and are still losing, then take heart in the fact that at least you are playing logically and soon you will be back to your winning ways because of your analytical skills. Once you start playing mathematically then the one thing you don’t want is luck, as you will solely depend on your skills and sometimes luck could play havoc with your tactics.
